How do you read a micrometer?
Micrometer readings can be done as follows:
- Main scale: the micrometre sleeve features a graduated scale in millimetres or thousandths of a millimetre (0.01 mm). Each marking represents a unit of measurement;
- Ruler scale: the ruler scale is placed parallel to the sleeve, graduated in micrometres (0.001 mm). You’ll find it at the top or bottom of the sleeve;
- Pointer: a pointer or reference line indicates the current measurement on the ruler scale.
To read the measurement, you’ll need to combine the reading of the main scale with the reading of the ruler scale. For example, if the Pointer is pointing to “25” on the main scale and “5” on the ruler scale, the measurement is 25.005 mm.
In the case of instruments with a digital scale, you can see the reading directly on the screen.
How do you measure using a micrometer?
To perform a micrometre reading correctly, make sure you follow these steps:
- Preparation: make sure your device is calibrated and clean before using it. Also make sure that the surface of the part to be measured is clean and free of particles;
- Open the jaws: turn the lever or knob to open the micrometre jaws. Place the part to be measured between the jaws;
- Adjust the jaws: use the lever or button to close the jaws around the part. Adjust the position of the jaws so that the part is secure but unmarked;
- Measurement reading: look at the graduated scale on the micrometre rod and read the measurement at the nearest graduation. The size can be read in millimetres or micrometres;
- Repeat: repeat the entire process and write down your measurements for future reference.
Once you have finished taking the reading, do not forget to store the instrument in your toolbox to prevent it from getting damaged and becoming ineffective.
