What is a car hood?

Car hoods are a system unique to convertible cars that protect the car’s interior from rain and other weather.

This mechanism is made up of several components:

  • The hood;
  • A metal structure;
  • The engine (in some vehicles only).

Some vehicles with a hood may contain a glass or transparent plastic window in the back, allowing drivers to see what’s going on behind their vehicle through their rear-view mirror.

What types of car hoods are there?

  • Fabric or soft top
  • Hardtop.

What are the advantages of having a convertible car?

Increased visibility

The open top of a convertible car provides drivers with increased visibility of everything around them. However, drivers should always be aware of a vehicle’s blind spots, even with increased visibility.

What are the disadvantages of having a convertible car?

1. Corrosion of the chassis

Because they do not have a fixed roof, convertibles lose an important part of their structure and consequent sturdiness. This degradation can lead to the chassis twisting and could even result in accidents.

2. Less safe

When the car top is down, this type of vehicle is exposed to objects that can fly into the car, injuring its occupants.

Convertibles are also easier targets for carjackers.

How do car hoods work?

There are two types of car hoods: automatic and manual hoods.

Automatic hoods

In automatic hoods, the hood mechanism can be controlled by the driver using a button or lever.

When activated, the motor starts lifting the hood, either opening or closing it.

These modern, electric mechanisms allow drivers to open and close car hoods without ever having to leave their vehicle.

Manual hoods

Manual hoods require drivers to remove the hood and all its mechanisms manually. In most convertible vehicles, this compartment is located in the boot.

When removing this type of car hood, it is essential that you unscrew the two fitting bolts on the front of your windscreen and open the hood compartment.

All electrical mechanisms on hoods must be protected from water and other impurities to ensure they keep working as they should.

In addition, you’ll need to lubricate the mechanisms to prevent rust and damage to metal parts.

4 Car hood maintenance tips

1. Have a garage

By having a garage (and keeping your car in it), you ensure that your car is safe, and the top is protected from the sun, rain and other external damage.

2. Take care of the hood fabric

Your hood fabric is responsible for preventing UV rays and rain from getting into your vehicle. Apply a product recommended by the vehicle manufacturer that protects the fabric from external damage and improves its waterproofing abilities.

3. Wash it regularly

Car hoods tend to absorb more dirt than normal vehicles, so you’ll need to clean and sanitise your car hood regularly to ensure it doesn’t face quicker wear than normal.

4. Check car hood mechanisms

The mechanisms that operate soft top hoods, such as electrical components exposed to rain, must be kept in good condition so that the car’s soft top works whenever it needs to.
